The reporting library
The concepts your accounts map to, with their definitions and where they sit on each statement. Look here when you decide where an account belongs.
Library is the reporting vocabulary your chart of accounts maps into. Each concept has a name, a definition and a place on the statements. When you are deciding where an account belongs, look here first, then apply the mapping in Ledger → Chart of Accounts. See Map your chart of accounts.
What you will see
Pick a taxonomy at the top. rs-gaap is the library's reporting concepts, drawn from the US GAAP taxonomy, and the one you will use most. Your own chart of accounts and any reporting extensions this company has added are listed too, each with how many elements it holds. A two-element cm entry holds the debit and credit concepts the ledger itself is built on.
Browse lists the concepts. Open one to read its definition, whether it is a debit or a credit, and whether it is a balance at a point in time or a flow over a period.
Hierarchy shows where concepts sit on each statement. Choose Presentation for the statement's layout or Calculation for how its lines add up, then pick the statement: cash under current assets, current assets under assets, and so on.
The concepts are drawn from the US GAAP taxonomy that public companies report in, which is why a mapped chart of accounts can be compared with SEC filers. See Compare with public companies.
When to use it
- An account is unmapped and you want the concept, not just a guess from the name.
- A match is flagged and you want to read what the concept actually means.
- You are looking at an "other" mapping and want a more specific concept.
Your AI assistant can list unmapped accounts and suggest a concept for each one. Its suggestions use no credits. Confirm them against the library when the name is close and the meaning might not be.
Try asking
- "Look up the library concept for deferred revenue. Is it a balance or a flow, and where does it sit on the balance sheet?"
- "Which concepts sit under operating expenses?"
- "We added a contractor-costs account. Which library concept should it map to?"
